Known in Portugal as petingas, these whole sardines are packed in organic extra virgin olive oil with a pinch of organic chilli. Soft and tender, with a rounded, fruity oil and a warmth that builds gently.
Maria Organic cans its fish on Portugal's Atlantic coast using the traditional pre-cooked method, working only with fresh fish caught in season.
Pile them onto buttered rye with cucumber and a soft-boiled egg, or eat them straight from the tin with a cold beer. Save the spiced oil for dressing potatoes or a tomato salad.
